L’Heure du Gouter: Sweet and salty cupcake at Baked

Baked is well known for its sweet and salty brownie, but the cupcake is fabulous too, with a whipped frosting and salty flakes.

Baked in Red Hook in Brooklyn is one of my favorite pastry shops in NY, solidly American in every good way.

We went to Recette in the West Village for brunch on a Saturday, after watching “Knuffle Bunny — The Musical” at the Skirball Center at NYU. I had actually planned on going to Minetta Tavern, but after a quick look at their menu, I thought it was a bit too expensive for brunch. I don’t know how the food at Minetta is, but I am so glad we went to Recette.

Here’s the thing about Recette: the dishes might be simple, but they are composed of excellent parts, and together they deliver haute satisfaction. Recette is homey but sophisticated, the dishes are pedestrian in origin but seriously executed; they care about the quality of the ingredients they serve, and it shows when you taste the dishes. In short, they appeal to comfort, and then confidently lead you into a different sphere by expertly handling the food. Continue reading
